PE
Our PE curriculum is based around our core values Successful Happy Included Nurtured Enriched and follows the National Curriculum guidance for Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
In today's world exercising and activity can often be neglected due to modern technology. Therefore, it is essential that in school children are given the opportunity to exercise correctly to help improve their lifestyles and their own physical fitness. Physical Education also aims to improve and develop children's social skills, team building skills and also their knowledge of how to live a healthy lifestyle.
Through our PE curriculum we aim to cover all of these skills and information across a variety of different ; sports, activities and challenges from EYFS up until upper KS2.
We aim for every child to develop
- The ability to acquire new knowledge and skills exceptionally well and develop an in-depth understanding of PE.
- The willingness to practise skills in a wide range of different activities and situations, alone, in small groups and in teams and to apply these skills in chosen activities to achieve exceptionally high levels of performance.
- High levels of physical fitness.
- A healthy lifestyle, achieved by eating sensibly, avoiding smoking, drugs and alcohol and exercising regularly.
- The ability to remain physically active for sustained periods of time and an understanding of the importance of this in promoting long-term health and well-being.
- The ability to take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating, and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, and motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others.
- Exceptional levels of originality, imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography, knowledge of how to improve their own and others’ performance and the ability to work independently for extended periods of time without the need of guidance or support.
- A keen interest in PE. A willingness to participate eagerly in every lesson, highly positive attitudes and the ability to make informed choices about engaging fully in extra-curricular sport.
- The ability to swim at least 25 metres before the end of Year 6 and knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.
In EYFS children will have the opportunity to:
- Explore new equipment and play
- Learn skills and rules through games
- Experience working as a team as well as an individual
In Key Stage 1 we teach our pupils about:
- An introduction to basic games - this gives children the chance to compete and learn aspects of fair play in competition
- Hand and Eye coordination skills. This improves children's overall co-ordination and confidence leading to an improvement in skills across a number of sports
- Gymnastics skills - Children will learn basic movements in gymnastics to improve their core strength and spatial awareness
- A chance to use specialised equipment (e.g. soft balls appropriate for age and using outside facilities such as the MUGA)
*FP children are supported in these lessons and join in with their peers (differentiated)
In Key Stage 2 we teach our pupils about:
- Developing a tactical knowledge in sports (e.g. using certain types of passes in game situations)
- Further develop hand and eye coordination skills in sports (matches and small group activities in basketball. Netball, football etc)
- Learn the rules of sports and hold an up level of fair play to teammates as well as opponents
- Develop gymnastic skills further (more advanced rolls, balances and jumps as well as using higher apparatus and ropes safely)
- Understanding the impact of sports in and out of school help to lead to an active healthy lifestyle
- Learn brand new teamwork skills through outdoor and adventurous activity
- Compete effectively in more competitive activities across the whole curriculum
- Create and perform sequences and dances to an audience
