Phonics

At Christ Church C of E Primary School we believe that for all our children to become fluent readers and writers, phonics should be taught effectively through a systematic and structured phonics programme (we use Little Wandle).

Reading

In our daily Whole Class Guided Reading lessons, we give all of our children the opportunity to be taught by the teacher and to be supported by our support staff and their peers.  All the children benefit from exposure to and engagement with high quality texts. 

All the National Curriculum objectives are covered across each  term with a particular focus on the key VIPERS skills: Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval, Summary, Sequencing. 

This year, 2022-23 we are bringing a greater focus to  non-fiction texts and to linking our reading lessons and skills to our English writing journeys and to the wider curriculum.

Writing

In our daily lessons, children are exposed to a range of real-life issues, such as WWII, The Vikings, The Great Fire of London and inspirational people. They are supported by teachers, support staff and peers. Writing is meaningful, with whole school writing opportunities occurring on a regular basis.

Talk for writing is an engaging teaching framework developed by Pie Corbett, supported by Julia Strong. It is powerful because it is based on the principles of how children learn. It enables children to imitate language they need for a particular topic orally, before reading and analysing it, and then writing their own version. 

Handwriting and spelling are covered daily during lessons to improve children’s outcomes in both areas.
