Remote education provision: information for parents 

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education where national or local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching. 

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home? 

Google classroom is updated daily so this will always be available. If your child has symptoms, is ill or off school for any reason they can access Google classroom at any time to catch up with their learning. Should a bubble close once a child is in school they may be sent home with paper based work which they may have been doing that day.

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we have needed to make some adaptations in some subjects where parents are unlikely to have the resources available to help with certain tasks, e.g. sawing wood to make a chariot.

Remote teaching and study time each day

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day? 

We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day: 

Nursery

Teachers will pre-record creative, PSHE, and some focused activities for your child to complete. There will also be stories to listen to with your child. 

In Early Years our learning is through play so please have lots play time and try to get outside. 

It is hoped that pupils will engage in activities during the day.

Reception

Teachers will pre record lessons or set activities via the google classroom for Literacy, Maths, PSHE RE and creative activities. 

In addition to this, there will be a pre-recorded Phonics session each day for your child. You will be notified whose group your child is in so that they can watch the appropriate video for their ability. 

In Reception a lot of our learning is through play so please have lots of play time and try to get outside. It is hoped that pupils will engage in activities during the day and spend at least 2 hours on learning and basic skills each day. 

Key Stage 1

Class teachers will pre-record lessons each day starting WB 8/1/21 for English, Mathematics and a topic lesson. This will be followed with the set work for that lesson. 

In addition to this, there will be a pre-recorded Phonics session each day for your child. You will be notified whose group your child is in so that they can watch the appropriate video for their ability. 

Live weekly ‘Google meet’ to give children a chance to speak with their teacher and see their friends. (Safeguarding information has been shared with parents). 

In addition, there will often be fun additional activities to keep them engaged. It is hoped that pupils will engage in activities during the day and spend at least 3 hours on learning and basic skills each day.

Key Stage 2

Class teachers will pre-record lessons each day starting WB 8/1/21 for English, Mathematics and a topic lesson. This will be followed with the set work for that lesson. 

In addition, there will often be fun additional activities to keep them engaged. It is hoped that pupils will engage in activities during the day and spend at least 4 hours on learning and basic skills each day. 

A couple of pupils from each class will be invited every Wednesday morning to share their views on different subjects with curriculum and school leaders. All children will be invited to give feedback about curriculum subjects periodically through Google classroom.

Accessing remote education 

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

We have a number of online learning packages which your child can access in addition to their Google classroom. Your child should have passwords in their reading records/letters sent for: 

• Reading eggs 
• Matheletics/Maths seeds 
• Time tables rock stars 
• 3rd Space Learning for identified Year 5 & 6 pupils 
• SATs boot camp 
• Spelling Shed 
• Phonics Play 
• Purple mash 
• 1 to 1 interventions, e.g. phonics, precision teaching

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

• If you require a chrome book for your child to work on please email the school or let the staff who call you now and your name will be added to the list. You will be contacted when it is ready for collection. 
• Again if you do not have internet access please contact the school and alert us - we may be able to help by providing a USB dongle. 
• If your child works best from a paper pack please contact us and we will supply one. However this will not necessarily link to the work posted daily on Google classroom as these lessons are not planned so far in advance. 
• If you need to upload your work remember this can be done using devices such as ipads and phones. You can also access Google classroom via Xbox and PlayStation.

How will my child be taught remotely? 

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely: 

Recorded teaching sessions will be available daily for English, maths and topic lessons. These lessons will be linked to the work which is then posted on Google classroom. Lessons are pre-recorded to support you choosing the best and most convenient time for you and your child to learn together. 

• Work may be linked to online programmes as above. 
• Phonics sessions and storytelling sessions for younger pupils. 
• Printed paper packs and activity books will be available for pupils at home.
• Links to other recorded teaching sessions and learning platforms are promoted on newsletters. 
• Weekly live ‘catch-up’ meetings with the teacher will be available for pupils to ask questions.

Engagement and feedback 

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

We expect parents to help set a routine to support their child’s education and promote their mental health and wellbeing. 

• We expect pupils to engage with their remote learning and return work to the teacher for feedback. 
• We would recommend that children engage in at least 3 hours of work each day depending on the age of the child. Please note between 3 to 5 hours of education will be provided for your child daily which is equivalent in length to the core teaching pupils would receive in school - this is a combination of recorded and live teaching and time for pupils to complete tasks and assignments independently.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns? 

Staff are able to check on Google classroom engagement and offer feedback on how your child is doing. We require paperpacks to be returned to offer support. Weekly calls will be made by staff so that you are able to ask questions and issues which can hopefully be rectified if you are having difficulties. Reasons for non-engagement will be discussed. 

How will you assess my child’s work and progress? 

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows: 

Work is marked daily if it is uploaded on time, i.e. within a few days of it being set. Teachers also sometimes offer feedback and give children the opportunity to resubmit to improve the quality of their work further. 

• Weekly live ‘catch-up’ meetings with the teacher who can provide feedback and celebrate success. 
• Paper packs need returning to school in order to provide feedback.
• Weekly calls home may be used to celebrate success and advise parents of issues and non-engagement. 

Additional support for pupils with particular needs 

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education? 

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways: 

• Children with an EHCP will be offered a place at school. Where this offer is taken up the child will have support with the work provided as part of normal school practice. 
• Where a child with a SEND remains at home weekly calls will be made to check in with the child and family. 
• Work will be provided in the appropriate format for that child. This may take the form of a pack at the appropriate level for that child, 1:1 live interventions, part of a different Google classroom, specific learning videos and fun activities and storytelling, etc
